About Hypnosis

 

Hypnosis is often referred to as the fast track therapy as it gets you the results you want in the shortest time. Most issues are improved in the first session and resolved in 3-6 sessions. If you are:

Treatment duration depends on your goals, and associated issues.  Usually you will see a difference after the first session, and continue to progress. Most single problems are treated in just 3 sessions. Re-evaluations will be done after 3 sessions to assess your progress and we will negotiate more sessions if needed. Most people need 3-6 sessions.

Hypnosis is a very pleasant feeling of natural, deep physical and mental relaxation.  You certainly will not be asleep or unconscious. Hypnosis accesses natural low alpha-theta brainwave, a mental state that opens up enhanced awareness and imaging allowing for perception and understanding beyond the narrower spectrum we refer to as ‘ordinary’. Hypnotic brainwaves are in an awakened state, although some people lose track of the room completely, others, will remain aware of everything that is going on in the room.  Often people describe the process as in and out of awareness.

Most of us are familiar with the mind triggering a physiological response such as the heart racing when hearing a police siren when driving slightly too fast, or mistaking a stick for a snake. Perhaps you have a fear or phobia which can be triggered by a memory or thought. 
This is how it works- our emotional brain (limbic system) records and stores every experience from the womb through to adulthood either consciously or subconsciously. Family patterns and life experience positive or negative affect how we think, feel and respond now. Emotional responses are transmitted to the body the autonomic nervous system, which releases biochemical and electrical messages into the bloodstream.
Mind body interactions are circular in nature-each affecting the other in both directions. The lower brain stem control centres, which serve as relay stations of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems regulate our responses (fight or flight). This network of communication can increase blood pressure, control body temperature, regulate blood flow, increase or decrease salivation and gastrointestinal activity, cause bladder emptying and sexual orgasm. Therefore all organs can respond psychosomatic. Neuron pathways are created in the brain determined by emotional responses to life events and we develop learned patterns of behavior which we continually re enact. These patterns are held in memory; firmly held patterns create habits, and beliefs. Yet all firmly held beliefs where once a new idea, and doubt-able. Therefore all neuron pathways can be changed. Change your mind and change your bodily response.

The simple answer is yes – if you have the capacity to focus your mind and relax then you can be hypnotised. Most people need a little help in the form of a guided hypnosis session which is personalised to you and the issue you are wanting help with.

People sometimes worry that they won’t be hypnotised because of excessive mental chatter or an over-analytical mind. Successful hypnosis is more about shifting your focus.  I often tell people that you should think of this like a radio or an Ipod.  You want to turn up the volume on the relaxation experience, and turn down the volume of what is happening in your mind or the room. You can also set an intention that any extraneous sounds that you hear in the room, will take you deeper into the hypnotic process.

Sometimes people expect hypnosis to be or feel a certain way – often feeling as if they weren’t really hypnotised because they were aware of what was happening. Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness but it is NOT sleep – so expect to be awake but more relaxed than usual.

Often people who aren’t visual may feel that nothing much happened. However, if you review your experience, you may find that many things actually happened just in non-visual ways.  Did you smell anything?  Feel anything in your body?  Did you hear anything? Often people sense something or just know what is going on without seeing or experiencing anything directly.
